SHU U-TURN

Sheffield Hallam University informed Cedric Pugh by letter on 6th April 2001 that it would enter him in RAE 2001. This was a complete U-turn, a reaction to CAFAS’ and Times Higher Education Supplement’s publicity, and to litigation. The earlier decision to exclude Professor Pugh had no validity and could be interpreted as victimisation.

John Rogers, Research Assessment Exercise manager at the Higher Education Funding Council for England, had indicated that Professor Pugh’s work was eligible. Senior managers at SHU were informed of this on 19th and 26th February 2001.

POSTSCRIPT

1. CAFAS, on behalf of Claire Hobbs, has written to the Employment Service asking for clarification of the procedures followed in giving and withdrawing the award of the "two ticks" Disability Symbol.

2. A vote of "no confidence" in the Vice-Chancellor of Sheffield Hallam University, Professor Diana Green, has been carried by 96% of Natfhe members who participated.

Natfhe has been in dispute with SHU over the Draconian measures taken by the university during Natfhe’s recent marking and exam boycott as part of the union’s ongoing national industrial action over pay and conditions.

The academic boycott of SHU continues.
